Holidays, hangovers, digestion and hydration

Holidays, hangovers, digestion and hydration

Winter rhymes with raclette, fondue, heavy and calorie dish and often accompanied by a lot of alcohol (wine).

Liver attack, indigestion, hangover… During the end-of-year celebrations our body, finally especially our digestive system, is put to the test. While our belly has been considered our second brain for decades, it is not surprising that fatigue sets in and that many inconveniences ensue in the face of all these excesses.

What is a hangover?

The expression " hangover " first used to describe the sensations of heavy alcohol consumption, has gradually moved into everyday language to characterize the symptoms of a "bad drink". A hangover that can otherwise come across as “xylostomiasis”.

Its effects:

The next day upon waking, typical symptoms of veisalgia include fatigue, feeling weak, thirsty, headache, muscle aches (cramps, body aches) nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, tenderness to light and noise, anxiety, irritability, sweating and increased blood pressure. Hangovers can vary from person to person.

Alcohol, through its diuretic action, causes a state of dehydration which, combined with the toxic effects of alcohol and its metabolites, contributes to the symptoms of a hangover.

A zoom on this dehydration effect: Why does alcohol dehydrate?

A diuretic is a substance that increases urinary excretion (diuresis). Blood is filtered by the kidneys and water and liquid wastes from the body are eliminated in urine. In the body, antidiuretic hormone plays a major role in regulating water excretion. She

allows the kidneys to reabsorb water, that is to say to keep it in the body, thus decreasing the urinary volume.

However alcohol inhibits the release of antidiuretic hormone. A reduced level of this hormone prevents the reabsorption of water in favor of an increased production of urine: alcohol is a diuretic.

This water loss and a slight dehydration of the body due to the diuretic effect of alcohol, can be accentuated by the side effects of alcohol overconsumption such as sweating, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Please note: dehydration due to alcohol can also be accompanied by a loss of minerals. How long can this last?

Hangover symptoms peak when the blood alcohol concentration in the body returns to near zero. Symptoms can last 24 hours or more.

Digestion or rather indigestion during the Holiday season!

Indigestion is a general term used in connection with pain and discomfort felt in the stomach.

The characteristic symptoms are heartburn, consequences of acid reflux, from the stomach to the esophagus. Indigestion can be collective (resulting from a food infection for example) or individual.

Dyspepsia: a weight on the stomach!

Impression of having trouble digesting, of being "smeared", nausea, stomach ache, bloating... Dyspepsia includes these different disorders without there being any abnormality of the stomach or gallbladder. Stress, meals that are too large or eaten in a hurry, tobacco could play an important role. Medicines help buffer against stomach acid, others can reduce gastric secretions to fight against nausea.

How to prevent and fight against this condition? Anti-hangover and indigestion tips :

8-course holiday meals, raclettes galore, endless bubbles... To ease the difficult tomorrows, the idea is not to say no to the festivities but to accompany them with recuperative drinks or food supplements to offer to his metabolism a benevolent boost. In the program ? We detoxify the body to do the “cleaning” in record time to start from scratch the next day. The advantage? No more spending the day in bed waiting for nightfall to get back on your feet. Here is a non-exhaustive list of remedies to look fresh and available. However, the best advice is to stop before it's too late...

Hydration

In a person dehydrated after consuming alcohol, the manifestations of dry mouth, feeling of intense thirst and headaches will be amplified. Maintaining hydration helps alleviate hangover symptoms.

How to stay hydrated?

By drinking in moderation throughout the evening or by opting for effective grandmother's tips: mixtures containing ginger and lemon or herbal teas to facilitate digestion. On the other hand, it is advisable to pour a teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of warm water and stir the mixture well then drink it. Others, on the other hand, prefer to opt for isotonic drinks or strong coffees the day after the evening... But in reality, these tricks do not all offer absolute efficiency.

Better still Hydratis is there for you:

If you forgot to drink throughout the evening, Hydratis can help you optimize water absorption, prevent dehydration and morning headaches.

Indeed, Hydratis pastilles allow water to be better absorbed by the body and thus to have an accelerated hydration. Moreover, by its formulation rich in mineral salts, such as magnesium as well as in trace elements such as manganese and zinc, they allow

To hydrate the body optimally after a boozy evening, we advise you to dissolve two Hydratis tablets in a large glass of water in the evening before going to bed and to take them again in the morning.

Precautions :

Some people take over-the-counter pain relievers (often paracetamol) before bed to minimize the effects of a hangover. It is important to recognize that the combination of alcohol and paracetamol can be toxic to the liver. Like alcohol, some over-the-counter pain relievers, including aspirin and ibuprofen, can increase acid release and irritate the stomach lining. So exercise caution when using these medications before or after drinking alcohol.
